ST Fic: Guilty Conscience

Title: Guilty Conscience
Rating: G
Author: Me aka [livejournal.com profile] seramercury
Author's Notes: Just so you know, this is my first time writing Chekov in any form and pardon me for not writing the accent because I was nervous enough about this. LOL!
Disclaimers: The boys aren't mine and neither is Star Trek.

I sank into one of the seats in the lounge. It was late so no one else was around. If Bones found me, he'd have me sedated and dragged to sickbay. Laying my head back, I closed my eyes and went through everything that happened since the first attack on Vulcan.

I heard movement behind me and immediately sat up, wincing at the pain in my ribs. "Captain! I did not know you were here, Sir!"

I chuckled to myself as I sat back down. "It's all right, Mr. Chekov. Have a seat."

The kid was quiet and nervous as he sat down across from me. I never knew I had that effect on people. He looked ready to say something, but promptly closed his mouth. I raised an eyebrow and he finally spoke up.

"I...I've been thinking about what happened just before Vulcan broke up. About Commander Spock's mother."

I nodded remembering the look on both Chekov and Spock's faces after that. Of course almost five hours later I had to 'emotionally compromise' Spock, throwing that in his face. Enough about me, though, he really needs to know this wasn't his fault.

"Mr. Chekov, you do realize that as much as we want and as much as it sucks, we can't save everyone. You tried your best under the conditions you were given. You were still able to save Spock, his Father, and most of the Elders. You can't keep blaming yourself for something you couldn't control."

He looked up at me as if trying to believe what I was saying. "I killed her, Captain..."

I shook my head vehemently. "No, Pavel, you did NOT kill her! Nero and his crazy band of Romulans did."

"But Captain, I lost track of her. It never should have happened!" Chekov exclaimed. It was the first time I'd ever seen him so angry.

He stood up and began to walk towards the door but I grabbed his arm. "No, it shouldn't have! Vulcan should not have been destroyed! The Kelvin should not have been destroyed, but it all was and we have to pick up the pieces!"

Chekov stared at me in stunned silence. Finally he said, "I'm sorry, Captain. I didn't mean... I should not..."

"Don't worry about it. I understand completely. Just deal with it one day at a time. Remember, no one blames you for any of it."

"I know that now, Captain. Thank you."

I smiled, patting his shoulder. "Any time, Mr. Chekov."

Yep it works! Thanks so much Michelle! You can delete the Tommy lyrics below if you want. Love the Star Trek fic! I could really hear Chekov in my mind with the accent and all :) .

Thank you, dear. I appreciate the feedback. I've never written Chekov so I was kind of worried I didn't get him right. The person I wrote it for enjoyed it so that makes me happy. :)

I never write accents because I figured if you watch enough of the show, you'd be able to hear it in your head. I don't know if you watch Stargate Atlantis, but there's a a character who was Scottish and I never wrote his accent. I know many people who did, but sometimes when they did that, I had no clue what he was supposed to be saying. LOL!!

Great story! I can't wait for the movie to come out on DVD so I can watch it over, and over, and over...
